More about... James F!@#$%^ Friedman

James F!@#$%^ Friedman has been a fixture in New York's underground dance music scene for a decade now. As a journalist, DJ, promoter, label head and music supervisor, he has championed emergent sounds and artists like few others in North America. A one time staffer at XLR8R, Vice, and The Fader, he's also worked at !K7 Records, managing releases for the likes of Swayzak, Trevor Jackson and Tiga. In 2003, he left !K7 to launch Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings in the US, which he ran successfully for two years.
In that same period, his REFUSE! parties took off, garnering massive press support from the likes of I-D Magazine and playing host to visionary DJs like 2manydjs, Headman, Twitch, Erol Alkan and Michael Mayer. In fact, REFUSE! hosted the US debuts of Tiefschwarz, Ewan Pearson, Jackson and His Computer Band, Cut Copy, Annie's live band, David Gilmour Girls, and Greg Wilson.
His 2006 mix cd Go Commando served to establish Friedman's tastemaking aesthetic internationally, garnering rave reviews (10/10 in Vice for instance) and a nomination for Mix Album of the Year from the PLUG Awards alongside such heavyweights as Richie Hawtin, Ewan Pearson, DJ Shadow and Dominick Eulberg.
Already touring across the US and Europe, Friedman used this momentum to expand his efforts, launching Throne of Blood Recordings with the members of the Rapture in late 2006.
In 2007, Throne of Blood hit the road across the US and Canada alongside the Ed Banger Records crew to host and DJ at the infamous "Dafter Parties," after-show events following Daft Punk's groundbreaking ALIVE 2007 Tour.
2008 has seen Friedman return to throwing parties in New York, launching the highly successful Prime Time series with partner-in-crime Eamon Harkin. Held at classic venues Love and Santos Party House, Prime Time has hosted Metro Area, Todd Terje, Alexander Robotnik, Rub N Tug, Hercules and Love Affair, Ewan Pearson, Greg WIlson, and Stacey Pullen.
Next followed a year-long residency at the white-hot Mister Saturday Night parties in NYC where he shared the bill with Farley Jackmaster Funk, Kerri Chandler, Justin Martin, Mr. Fingers, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, JD Twitch and many more.
2010 has seen Friedman focusing on his record label, Throne of Blood, building up a schedule of amazing releases from new comers Populette and Harkin & Raney while working with veterans like Mugwump and The Rapture.

More about... Permanent Vacation DJ team

A lot has happened since the disco ball started spinning in Munich discotheques in the 1970s for the first time. Thirty years later, its motor has gained new drive and the ball is spinning faster than ever. Partly responsible for this renaissance is the Munich label: PERMANENT VACATION.

Founded by TOM BIOLY and BENJAMIN FRÖHLICH during Germany's tropical summer of 2006, PERMANENT VACATION has not only survived in the obscure jungle of modern dance music, but has established itself as a flagship of the DISCO MOVEMENT and its variations such as BALEARIC, COSMIC, KRAUTROCK or PROTOHOUSE, all of which have become extremely popular on all continents. However, BIOLY und FRÖHLICH don't consider Disco as a mere retro phenomenon (even though there shouldn't be a lack of authenticity), as they have their home and base in Munich - the city that, along with New York, shaped the early days of Disco. BIOLY and FRÖHLICH rather deem Disco a form of mentality dissolving from all too fixed and earnest paradigms of dance music and the undercooled sound aesthetics of the electronic scene, promising warmth, playfulness and fun. What else should partying be about?

If the label wasn't enough the two also started to produce their own tracks under the moniker Permanent Vacation (yes yes we know it's the same name as the label)

So far Bioly&Fröhlich have released a remix for their own artist Woolfy Vs.Projections, which got a lot of attention from higly acclaimed DJs like Hell, Prins Thomas, Todd Terje, Solomun, the Innervisions Crew, Richard Dorfmeister etc. Their first EP called "TIC TOC" featured Kathy Diamond on vocals and the massive flipside "Zucker Hut." More homemade PV sound is soon to come!

As DJs, Benjamin Fröhlich and Tom Bioly, the heads behind Permanent Vacation, don't necessarily play one style exclusively. Quite on the contrary, they are known for their extremely open, warm, driving sets, consisting of psyched out disco,dub-techno,slow-mo house, early electro and leftfield pop.

Over the past years, they also earned a reputation by organizing partys and hosting various clubnights in Munich, where they have played alongside highly respected artists such as Lindström & Prins Thomas,Chateau flight, Todd Terje; Maurice Fulton; Joakim, Tim Sweeney, Peter Kruder, Holden, Holy Ghost!,Hercules and Love Affair etc.

So look out for a good time when they come to town !

More about... Todd Terje

Following a string of celebrated releases leaning on everything from kitschy euro sounds to deep funk and latin jazz, the relatively new to the scene Todd Terje has already made his mark within dance music circuits. Gems such as the cheese monster “Eurodans” and the latin disco-fuelled edit of Jacko’s “Can’t Help it” under his Tangoterje edit-moniker instantly made industry types and clubbers alike go bananas, and whatever the 25 year old Norwegian puts his fingers on, it always comes out with that crucial blend of musicality and playfulness.

Growing up in the rural village of Mjøndalen, dance music influences were scarce, and no, there was never any Diskoklubb there. Not a lot of obscure disco or acid house in his milk either. However, during the early/mid nineties dance culture sneaked it way into even the most remote parts of Norway, thanks to the popularity of acts like the Prodigy and national radio stations filling prime time slots with underground jocks Olle Abstract and Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus. On the more personal level, Terje’s sister was a close friend of the late Tore “Erot” Kroknes, and the tapes she brought home to the young Terje became a major source of inspiration. Playing around in his early teens on a crap PC together with his mate Dølle Jølle, Terje made his first attempts on house and jungle, which they played from cassette tapes on junior high school-dances. Maybe too young for old music back then, Terje reckoned that disco was all a bit silly - until Bjørn Torske’s “Sexy Disco” caught his ears in 1999.

Training to become a pianist Terje enrolled at a local music school, but to his disappointment there wasn’t much jazz being taught there. Gradually leaving the musical career path, he later moved on to studying physics at the University of Oslo. Although not longer aspiring to become a pianist, he was by no means over music. In 2001 Terje got in touch with Prins Thomas, who was at the time working at HS Records in Oslo. Thomas soon recognized his potential, and helped pushing Terje in the right directions. Oslo is a small place where like minded folks tend to join forces, and with his thorough musical understanding and nerdy like interest in old and new records spanning from that new Idjut Boys 12” to experimental synth bands very few of us have ever heard of, he soon became one of the key players on the Oslo electronic disco scene. Besides working on his own projects, Terje’s played on some of Prins Thomas’ tracks, and not to mention his remix of the Lindstrøm 12” “Another Station”.

Is it house, funk, techno or disco? Terje is speaks of catchy rhythms, dubby sounds, dreamy synth layers, cinematic moods, a playful approach and searching for that one nerve when asked to describe his music, and the resistance to being pigeonholed is obvious. His next ambition is to make a concept album ala Voyage’s first “around-the-world” release, if he can find time between other projects, studies and DJ gigs. Terje has already played around Europe, and is looking forward to gigs in Japan and NYC this summer. “I both like playing big room/macho style, but at the same time it’s the girls I play for really. So I guess it’s a mixture of high octane, leather homo-disco done up with mambo, coconuts and lipstick”. Definitely one to look out for.
